Bonjour all
Can you tell the manufacturer date from an f40's serial? I have read that you can but I got a bit lost in the translation.
Cheers, Stephen.

Hi Arnaud
Hope you have been keeping well?
I picked up two f40's in a haul of cine gear and lenses last friday.

1st f40
3650111 and has "Made in France" on the top near the logo and focusing. Only 1 flash port on the camera.
Lenses are 1077638 and 1077586

2nd f40
1873108 No Made in France stamp and 3 flash ports on one side.
Lenses 888400 and 822982

Regards, Stephen

:Hello: In F 40, the number is the serial number, but 3 last digit...

1873108 => Serial number is 1873

3650111 => Serial number is 3659

The 3 last digit are linked with date. 2 first for month, the last one for year! You have to add 1930, 1940 or 1950 depending of serial number...

1873108 => Serial number is 1873 --- 10 - 8 => October 1948

3650111 => Serial number is 3659 --- 11 - 1 => November 1951

It's looks a little cumbersome, but generally it's coherent... In the book "Jules Richard et la Magie du Relief", Jacques Perrin saids is some English collectors which decypher that... He said also that some "bugs" can appear with le month number...

This number is date of construction... In his first book, J. Perrin give a listing of number and date of sold.
1950 - from 1678 to 2335 sold to BUSCH - USA
1953 - from 3301 to 4044...
Have a good day!

Thanks for the link Arnaud! Both are not the Bush model.
The person I got them off said that the owner was a professional photographer/film maker and did some work for Sawyers Australia. Sawyers is a US firm that is best known for its product called ViewMaster. I done a web search and found a newsletter from Sawyers stating that the Australian office had been working with the studio these came from. There was also an old box full of filters and stuff that was from Sawyers as well. (see pic)
Looks like these F40's were used to make Viewmaster reels. That said , Australian Viewmaster reels are not very common.

I have read that the F40's were made from 1938 to 1955. The link here says differently, 41 to 57. I am guessing my info source is incorrect?
Do you know what part of the camera is platinum? Is it a mixture in the alloy or plating of a parts?

If you want any close up pictures of any part of these cameras let me know.
Cheers, Stephen.

:Hello: Very nice items! I think flash ports are not from factory.
In France, we call "platine" the front of camera where is the lens... Nothing to see whith metal "platinium"... On F 40, it's brass with Chromium plating.
The first Vérascope 40 was made in 1938, but with WW2, no one where sold... It's only in 1941 that some where sold, but very few. :ronchon:
In 1956-57, Richard was solding, but not assembling these cameras.
In France, Mr Kovalef was also using a Verascope 40 to make cards for Lestrade, a maker of stereoscopic views and viewers. :Tchin:

Thank-you / Merci for this information Arnaud!
The flash ports were probably done here in Australia I suspect. The 1951 model looks like it has a port on a port.

Cheers, Stephen.
