Kodak with lead seal question.

Message non lu par Stephen G »

Hello
I have a Kodak junior 620 with lead seal on the handle.
The history of the cameras life:
Was in Den Haag 1937 and then lived in Germany until just before WW2 started.
From there it went to New Zealand.
Can anyone offer any information on why the seal is there?
Regards, Stephen.

Generally, these seal are set on cameras by customs to justify the origin of the camera. With our littles countries, it is current to cross frontiers. :D

Thanks Eric. I guess its common to find a camera in Europe with one attached still. Just never seen one here before.

Hi Stephen,
I have been looking at many cameras in Europe and to be honest with you, It is the first time I see this kind of seal.
May be because owners removed them from the camera as soon as they could.

Could you explain what is stamped onto the lead. It is not obvious looking at the pictures

kind regards

Daniel

typical custom seal... was used in Belgium until the early 70'... you needed to have the seal so that the item was known as "belgian" when you came back fom holiday in France for instance... otherwise you had to pay duties...
Frequent on cameras, binoculars... but not on lenses ...
Since my family lived very near the border, and with part both sides of the border, I remember that pre-xmas phone discussion about chocolates, tobaccoes (cheaper in Belgium), wines and liquor (from France) and photogears (cheaper in Belgium, specially the german one, so I learned to spell voigtländer very early)....

The usual belgian seal has a lion on one face ....

It is old and worn so the detail is not really there anymore.
Maybe it's origins will be recognized by someone.
I wonder if it adds to the cameras collect-ability? :gratgrat:

:Hello: Hi!

I'm not really sure this seal will add to the value of the camera. They were indeed quite common, although it's weird that the seal is still attached to the camera :gratgrat:.
If it doesn't add to the financial value of the camera, it sure adds some mystery to this camera's history :D !

Hello!
Beeing a 71-yo Belgian reader of this forum, I won't resist to put my piece of salt into the cake!
As a child, I saw many of these so-called "Belgian seals" attached to various objects.
My father had one sealed around the steering column of his Renault 4cv when we made our first trip to France (Normandy and Brittany to be accurate)
in the year 1954 if I remember well. Those steals were absolutely not similar to the one presented here. They showed a very clearly contoured figure of a lion.

A few years later (let's say 1962) when I got my first decent camera, I got it declared to a friendly (!) customs officer, but no lead seal anymore.
It was replaced by a very official looking peace of paper.

Not sure this will help, but I hope it will be fun to some of you.

Belgian custom seals appear in this thread : http://www.collection-appareils.fr/phpB ... 66#p161720" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Paper seals, not lead ones !
