Hard for a manufacturer to name a third generation, when the second is already a “new”. Canon nevertheless named this one “New” (what is basically different from n for new) in order to ensure a continuity in the mind of the users. New-F-1 is F-1 entirely re-examined to integrate all the technological advancements appeared from the release of the initial model, 10 years before.
Thus, the shutter is new. It allows speeds B, 8,4,2,1,1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/15, 1/30, 1/60, 1/125, 1/250, 1/500, 1/1000, 1/2000 second, but slow speeds (below 1/125) from now on are managed electronically, by using the pose. That makes it possible to make available more easily of very slow speeds (up to 8 seconds).
The prism and glass of centring are interchangeable.
