Lumiere Eljy

Traduction de Sylvain Halgand.

Eljy like LJ. The “L”, it is obvious, comes from Lumière, like Frères Lumière. Normal, since the company was indeed rested by our two pioneers of the cinema. But the “J” with what to connect it? Mystery!

To understand, it is necessary to go up years behind. After having made known the cinematograph (“a process without future…”) by dint of arrival of train in station, of exit of factory or sprinkled sprinkler, the Lumière brothers, of Lyon, joined the Jougla company of Paris (1911), to manufacture photo cameras.

In 1937, this company, launches one of very first the 24 x36 French mm. The camera, tiny, uses a film which is specific for him. It will evolve until 1951, year when it will be replaced by Eljy Club.

The tube which supports the lens and the shutter is extractable. The back is with slide. The finder of the Galileo type is assembled on hinges. The shutter makes it possible to have speeds: 1/10, 1/25, 1/50, 1/100 and 1/125, the exposures T and B. Focusing is possible 0,50 m ad infinitum, while making turn the frontal lens. The lens is Lypar 3,5.

The model that I have is 1949. This dating is possible inside thanks to the letter which follows the job number. First Eljy built into 1937 have the letter G. Then each year, the letter advances of a row 1937 G, 1938 H, 1939 I, 1940 J, 1941 K, etc.

The animal is rather rare. We don't find it on the first come secondhand trade. I have this one thanks to working colleagues , who at the end of a mission, to greet my departure, offered it to me. You have such sympathetic colleagues, you? Hello, my friends!!!

In 1940, this camera cost 415 francs.
In Photo-Plait catalog 1938 , on the page of Eljy the “Super-Eljy" is also described. It is distinguished from Eljy by chrome trimmings luxates (black on Eljy), a shutter exposure and snapshot until the 1/125 second (whereas Eljy stops to the 1/100), a tripod socket, an mask panchro with slide and a flexible release.

Catalog 1949 of Photo-Plait proposes a Sommort enlarger using the camera and allowing enlargings to 13 X 18.

This camera was exported in the USA, at least in 1940 and 1941, under the denominations of Eljy (Lypar 3,5) and Eljy Jr. (Lypar 4,5). The first was sold $25 and second $16,50. They were distributed by Tetra Co.
