Chronology of cameras Canon
The Ixus cameras are cameras that use APS film. The design of the first model and its extremely small size, comparable to that of a pack of cigarettes, were highly notable. Its meticulously crafted metal construction went against the prevailing trend in the market, which was dominated by plastic. Consequently, it was considered a high-end camera.
Canon diversified the series with cameras that were dissimilar, lacking the same characteristics or level of finishing. The common factor among them was the use of APS film.
The Ixus cameras remained on the market for a few years. They were successful, as between May 1996 and January 1999 (the release date of the IXUS II), over 2.2 million units were sold.
However, the APS debacle hastened the disappearance of these cameras. The advent of digital technology definitively ended the era of APS. Production of the films ceased in 2011.
Canon retained the name for its new digital compact cameras. In this case, the name is supplemented with the word "Digital."

This small (about the size of a pack of cigarettes) became a best-seller in the APS format and photography more generally.
Its size, photographic quality, and robustness made it the companion of many amateur photographers in search of a pocket alternative to their heavy and bulky SLR cameras, as well as demanding amateurs in terms of quality but refusing the constraints imposed by usual equipment.
Its multi-zone meter ensures excellent exposure, even in complex lighting conditions. The fill-in flash is perfect and allows for beautiful outdoor portraits. Detection and correction of backlighting (+1.5) are automatic.
The 24-48 mm zoom (equivalent to a 35-70 in 35 mm) consists of six lenses, including two aspherical ones. It yields good results.
Above the camera, near the LCD screen, are two buttons. The first one is labeled "Date." It allows associating a date with each photo. Contrary to what is known, this date is not embedded in the photo but recorded on the magnetic track of the APS cartridge.
The second button is named "Title." It is accompanied by a sticker on the back of the camera. This sticker associates numbers and phrases:
I love you
Thank you
Best wishes
Happy birthday
Congratulations
Likewise, the selected message will be stored on the magnetic track. The user will therefore be free to choose whether to include the date and/or message on the printed photo. The date setting and message selection are done by pressing tiny buttons, also located near the LCD. To avoid any manipulation errors, these two buttons can only be used with a pointed object. This pointed object is always attached to the wrist strap. Indeed, a small plastic piece has a prong on one side and a key on the other side to open the battery compartment. Collectors, for once, leave the wrist strap with the camera; it is an integral part of it.
The construction of this model uses metal. As a result, it is heavy but very sturdy. When not in use, nothing protrudes, further enhancing its durability.
At its launch, its price was 1990 francs.
