Chronology of cameras Butler Bros
Butler Brothers is not a manufacturer but a retailer. It is even likely that these brothers were the inventors of the "department store" concept (similar to Manufrance) in 1877 in Boston.
This substantial American detective camera has the peculiarity of not being equipped with an automatic plate holder. The plates are in double wooden holders, concealed by shutters, similar to large format camera holders. They are placed manually, one after the other, inside the folding camera, through a trapdoor that opens on the top. The camera is made of wood covered in leather. The lens, probably a meniscus, does not have an adjustable diaphragm. A small tab allows choosing between a long exposure and an instantaneous shot.
