Chronology of cameras Balda

The major difference between the Juwella and Fixfocus is that the former are single-format (6 x 9), while the latter are dual-format. However, by the late 1930s, the two series converge, and some Juwella models become dual-format.

The initial model is called Jubella, a name derived from "Jubilé" (Jubilee), commemorating the company's 25th anniversary. It is a camera with automatic opening, featuring a basic shutter and lens. From 1933, the name changes to Juwella, and various versions emerge. While some maintain the level of refinement of the Jubella, others have brighter lenses and faster shutters.
The early Juwella models have a knob for advancing the film, while later ones have a key. This evolution contrasts with what is often seen in other brands. Similar to the Fixfocus, the edges of the body of some models occasionally have a step.

At Balda, series of cameras with the same name are numerous and generally have a significant lifespan. This doesn't simplify the collector's identification task. This is the case with this Juwella.

Through a process of elimination, one can attempt to identify and date this model more precisely.

The legs supporting the optical block provide no assistance in identification, as they appear on several Balda models spanning different eras. The Juwella lens narrows down the search to models with the same name.

The film winding key is a late characteristic, dating from 1936 to 1938. The sharp ends of the body are indicative of the 1938 model. In contrast, the 1936 version exhibits a distinct break in the cut shape of the leatherette on the sides.

The shape of the latch confirms the late nature of this model.
