Chronology of cameras Burke and James

Manufactured in Chicago by Burke & James, this camera is known as the No. 1 Folding Ingento in the USA, a name engraved inside the back. However, it was imported and sold in France by Photo-Plait, which modified its name and included two versions in its 1917 catalog. This particular version features the fastest shutter speed of up to 1/300 and a brighter lens – the Berthiot Perigraphe with an aperture of 6.8 – compared to the base version.

The only true peculiarity of this slim, compact 6 x 9 folding camera with a leather-covered bellows and body is its original focusing system. A lever, attached to the front and center of the folding bed (which folds to the right to close the camera), advances the entire lens board when turned forward for capturing images at distances closer than infinity.
