The subject of this paper is not to tell the story, otherwise perfectly expressed in the page dedicated to him by EC, but to analyze one of its peculiarities ; namely making in three languages : English, French and German .
Together with André Bessot , we identified on the Web, for two years, all sales of Compass ( Ebay , Westlicht , Christies ... ) . We have , so far unearthed 221 including 177 with an identifiable engraving. It shows that 136 ( 77% ) are engraved in English, 30 (17% ) are engraved in French and 11 (6% ) in German .
If we refer to the "Chiffres Clé" (Key Figures) from Patrice-Herve Pont published by Fotosaga , the breakdown by numbers is as follows:
1000 - c 2000 in 1937
c 2000 - c 3500 in 1938
c 3500 - c 4700 in 1939
It is noteworthy that we found numbers higher than 4700 (up to 5137 )
Other than English engravings begin in late 1938 .
Below is a graph of the distribution of engravings .
