Chronology of cameras Burckhardt und Diener
According to certain advertisements published in 1898, the partners Burckhardt and Diener, manufacturers of photographic equipment, presented their production in Dresden, the cradle of optical and photographic industry in Germany. However, on the camera featured on this page, a small ivory plaque indicates that it comes from Hohenstein-Ernstthal, located 90 km from Dresden.
The plaque of the Dresden model, as seen in the advertisements, is made of hammered and engraved aluminum. This is the only known difference between the presented specimen and the one in the advertisements.
This travel camera is very simple, likely intended for a less affluent audience, making it a popularization device. It is made of walnut with copper fittings. The bellows are in red canvas, reinforced at the corners with burgundy leather. The lens board with vertical shift is simply held in place by pinching. The back is pivotable for landscape or portrait views. The folding tail closes with a latch. Attachment is done by clamping.
The lens is an unbranded meniscus. A disc with four pierced holes serves as a diaphragm. There is a rotary sector shutter with a single speed.
