Chronology of cameras Krauss E.

This model is the first Takyr Model I camera from Krauss, which appeared in the catalogue of 1903. A previous Takyr had been listed in the 1902 catalogue, but in fact was a Mentor II with a Krauss lens, and which would be listed in succeeding catalogues as the ‘Tykta à obturateur de plaques’. The Takyr is referred in the 1904 catalogue as the Takyr Krauss, maybe to emphasize that E. Krauss was the maker, as opposed to the previous Goltz & Breutmann model. The Takyr could be fitted with regular double plate holders, metallic single holders, rollfilm back or magazines for 12 plates.

The 1903 Takyr can be easily identified by the round articulated struts in central position, and was made only for the format 9 x 12 cm. The wooden casing is covered with black leather, and the front standard is metallic with wooden fittings. The large optical folding viewfinder has a pointer, with an additional articulated pointer on the lens barrel. There are two bubble levels, and the pleated bellows are dark brown.

The focal plane shutter is controlled by a combination of slit width and spring tension delivering speeds up to 1/1000 seconds plus P. The lens is a Krauss-Zeiss Unar with a focal length of 145mm and maximum aperture of 4.7, and the lensboard can move in all directions.
