Chronologie des appareils Canon
Les Ixus argentiques (Film APS) furent un succès, et le fiasco du système APS est la seule raison de leur disparition.
Ces appareils s'appelaient IXUS en Europe, IXY au Japon et ELPH en Amérique. Canon reprit les mêmes noms pour les appareils numériques grand public. Afin de les distinguer, le mot Digital fut ajouté. A partir de 2010, le mot Digital disparaît du nom des modèles, Canon jugeant sans doute qu'il n'y a plus de risque de confusion avec les Ixus APS.
Il est intéressant de remarquer que le nom américain est précédé de Powershot, nom qui sera généralisé un peu plus tard. Les marques IXUS, IXY et Powershot ont été déposéess en 1995 et 1996.
La gamme est très dense, Canon sortant rapidement un nouveau modèle dès qu'une amélioration technique était disponible. De ce fait, la numérotation des modèles perdit vite toute logique.

1 : IS pour Image Stabilization
2 : La série des Ixus HS se caractérise par l'intégration du système HS qui est l'utilisation d'un capteur CMOS rétro-éclairé et du processeur Digic IV. La série a commencé avec le Ixus 300 HS, mais le système existait préalablement sur le Powershot G11 et le Powershot S90 sous le nom de Dual Anti-Noise System. On peut supposer que HS signifie High-Sensitivity.

Face à la concurrence revenue à son niveau, Canon réagit en 2004 en sortant l'Ixus 40. Ce nouveau modèle ne remet pas en cause les fondamentaux du succès, mais propose un appareil moins épais, avec des angles adoucis et un écran plus grand.
La carte mémoire Compact-Flash est remplacée par une carte SD. La batterie est moins épaisse que sur les modèles précédents. Tout cela participe à l'amincissement de l'appareil.
