Chronology of cameras Belca

At the end of World War II, Germany was divided into several occupation zones (British, American, Soviet, and French). In 1949, the Soviet zone became the GDR (German Democratic Republic), while the other three zones formed the FRG (Federal Republic of Germany).

The GDR was a regime under Soviet influence, with industries nationalized within state conglomerates. Many large companies fled to the West, leaving behind factories and equipment. Among others, Balda moved to the West, but production continued in the East based on pre-war models.

The Belca Beltica is a good example of this situation. It is clearly manufactured from the Balda Baldalette, which was about to be released before the creation of the new republic. Balda produced it in the West but in limited quantities. To distinguish itself from the East German imitator, Balda quickly modified the cameras by adding a hood.

In 1954, during the Cold War, this camera was imported to the United States and distributed by Camera Specialty Co. It was sold for $55 with a Meritar lens and Cludor shutter, and for $75 with a Tessar lens and Compur Rapid shutter.
