The exact history of the Yamato brand is not well-known. If we focus on the cameras bearing the name Yamato, the first one (as defined) appears in the late 1940s. It is the Minon 35, a small, well-crafted camera that uses Bolta cartridge film. Shortly after, a horizontal folding 6x6 camera accompanies it, but neither of them is what the brand is known for. During the 1950s and 1960s, the manufacturer released a series of small 35mm cameras with different levels of technology (basic, rangefinder, automatic exposure), all remarkably well-made. The surviving examples found today are often in excellent condition. Chronologically, the early models were inspired by Leica, and later models have a more modern shape, but they all have a family resemblance. These cameras rarely fail to capture the interest of collectors.
Le Palmat Automatic est troublant pour qui connaît les autres appareils de la marque. En effet, on se demande s'il s'agit de vrai ou de faux. Il est marqué "Automatic", il y a une fenêtre de cellule et des trucs qui brillent autour de l'objectif.
En vérité, il y a du vrai et du faux. Le faux, c'est la collerette brillante autour de l'objectif, qui n'est là que pour faire joli. Par contre, l'appareil est réellement automatique, avec un contrôle d'exposition par une cellule au sélenium.
Il n'y a aucun réglage d'exposition, ni de mise au point. Le seul réglage est celui de la sensibilité du film. Au dos, se trouve une table de correspondance entre les Asa, les Din et un indice spécifique à l'appareil. Cet indice, allant de 2 à 6, doit être reporté sur un index coloré, situé au-dessus de l'objectif. Il semble que l'ouverture est constante et que seule la vitesse varie en fonction de la sensibilité indiquée et de la mesure par la cellule.
Sous l'objectif, il y a un réglage qui en temps normal doit être positionné sur Auto. En cas de photographie au flash, il faut indiquer la distance du sujet photographié, en déplacant un petit curseur.
