Chronology of cameras Voigtlander
Identified by its name embossed in the handle leather, this camera is a 9x12 cm Voigtlanger VAG.
The VAG was the lower end of the Voigtlander range of small plate cameras.
Equipped with a single-extension bellows, it had 6.5x9 and 9x12 cm variants.
The case of this particular example is made of wood with leather covering ; it neither has the lateral viewfinder with wire frame, nor the semi-circular focusing scale. The serial number, located close to the swing door hinge, is later than those of early models, but it does not have a first-digit letter ; this makes it a pre-1929 vintage.
The serial number of the Voigtar lens would make it a 1927 vintage. A 1928 model is displayed on this website and a number of differences can be seen.
The overall feeling is that the manufacturing quality is lower than a Bergheil’s, or even an Avus ; for instance the shift movements are obtained by way of sliding the front plate carrying the optical group, once a blocage screw has been loosened. No scroll-wheel fine-tuning here.
