The design of the Epoca completely breaks away from the concept of the T-shape formed by the body of a camera and its lens. Here, everything is designed around a 35-105 mm zoom. To hold the camera, the user positions their hands on either side of the 7.5 cm diameter tube.
The lens cover is connected to the lens itself via a vertical hinge, located on the right side of the camera. Opening this cap powers on the camera. The inner face of the cover is a large Fresnel lens, behind which is a flash with a guide number of 25 (at 105 mm). The Fresnel lens moves forwards or backwards depending on the focal length used.
The focusing is entirely automatic, provided by a 188-step autofocus, from 80 centimeters to 12.5 meters. In case of insufficient autofocus signal, the focus is automatically set to 24 meters, and to 96 meters in the absence of a beam. A button allows switching focus to infinity for landscapes. A green LED lights up in the viewfinder when the focus is achieved.
The viewfinder incorporates diopter correction for eyeglass wearers.
Light metering is done by a cell located at the end of the camera. Flash firing is automatic for high contrast subjects, such as backlit scenes or when the speed needs to drop below 1/100 of a second. However, the flash can be deactivated. It has a red-eye reduction function. An orange LED lights up in the viewfinder to indicate that the flash is operational. It blinks if a tripod is necessary. It blinks faster if the red-eye reduction mode is activated.
Loading the camera is done in the Leica style, from the bottom rather than the back. Film sensitivity adjustment is automatic thanks to DX coding.
The Epoca has a successor from 1992.
It's called the Epoca 135. This one has a 38-135 mm zoom. In addition to the functions of the Epoca, it adds burst shooting, a self-timer, and slow synchronization of the shutter with flash for night portraits with landscapes. Autofocus is still on three points, but with improved infrared. The flash guide number increases to 14 in wide-angle and 30 in telephoto.
The Epoca 135 also features a "constant magnification" function: active between 2.3 and 7.3 meters, the zoom adapts to the distance of the targeted subject so that its size remains the same in the image as it moves.
