Chronology of cameras Topcon

The Primo-Jr was the first 4x4 Japanese TLR, and was made during the brief 4×4 camera boom of the late 1950s. It first appeared in 1958 with the Seikosha-MXL shutter, when it is traceable on catalogues from distributors in Japan. It is a camera with a high quality of construction, with solid built and excellent finish. It uses 127 vest-pocket film delivering 12 frames of 4x4cm (‘superslides’). This first version has the logo of Tokyo Optical Co. at the front panel of the viewing hood (TKK - Tokyo Kogaku Kikai), except in a few early cameras.

The Seikosha-MXL is a leaf shutter which has M and X synchronization and is equipped with a light value system. The camera has a selector for M, F, and X synchronization located on the lower shutter area operated by a red lever. The values of aperture and speed are shown on a peep-window on the top of the viewing lens. Aperture is controlled by a lever on the left side of the taking lens, over a scale of light values (3 to 18); speed is controlled on an opposite lever (B, 1-500), operated on its own only if holding the aperture lever. Otherwise the operation of the speed lever will keep the exposure constant by adjusting the aperture value. The shutter release has no lock for preventing accidental exposure. The camera has no self-timer.

The taking lens is a fast and sharp 2.8 Topcor 60mm, stopping down to 22. The viewing lens is a Toko 2.8 triplet. Lines in the viewing screen indicate the parallax correction at close range. Top performance features include also a very bright viewfinder and a crank as advance mechanism. Although the features of the camera are advanced, the first frame must still be positioned by a red window located at the back.

Two variants of this MXL model were made, namely a gray version and another with a selenium lightmeter.
