Chronology of cameras Newman and Guardia
The Sibyl Excelsior is a peculiar folding bed camera produced between 1927 and circa 1933. It was designed for 2 ½ x 4 ¼’’ exposures on 116 roll-film. It has the typical Sibyl appearance with scissor struts and squared front standard, and is of full metal construction covered with black leather. This particular camera is an early example in view of its serial number.
The camera has rising and cross front movements for perspective correction. Focusing is made by lever at the bed front over a scale in yards, with indication of depth-of-field. The back is divided in two halves and when opened the loading spool chambers lift from the camera. At the top of the front standard there is a folding brilliant finder with a high quality groundglass.
The shutter is a Newman & Guardia two-blade pivotal return with pneumatic control. It delivers speeds in the range 2 to 1/150 seconds plus B and T. The lens is a Ross London Xpress with 138 mm of focal length and maximum aperture of 4.5.
