Chronology of cameras Stegemann

The Stegemann Hand-Camera is an evolution of the Geheim-Camera. In fact, until circa 1900 it was called also Geheim-Camera. This version was delivered from around 1895 until circa 1904, when it was substituted by the more modern metal strut version. The camera structure includes top and bottom wooden articulated struts, and unpleated leather bellows. The body is uncovered and made of blackened polished wood. Although at first sight the camera seems fragile, it is remarkedly solid and steady.

The camera was produced in three formats, for 9 x 12, 12 x 16.5 and 13 x 18 cm plates. It could use single plate holders of plate magazines. It was also made in stereoscopic formats 9 x 13 and 9 x 18 cm. This version is for 12 x 16.5 cm plate-size.

The shutter is the patented Lewinsohn focal plane, one of the first shutters with 2 blinds and external slit control. An additional component was included around 1902 and corresponds to a break mechanism for slow speeds, patented by Stegemann. The brake is regressive and functions by friction on a helical surface, which increases speed on the upper part of the picture (lower frame) with the intention of better exposing the sky in orthochromatic media. This camera has such mechanism and thus can be dated as posterior to 1902.

The fitted lens is a Steinheil Orthostigmat with 21 cm of focal length and maximum aperture of 6.8.
