Chronology of cameras Bentzin
The Verschluss-Camera (‘shutter-camera’) is a view camera made by Curt Bentzin since circa 1898 until the early 1920s, when it was substituted by the Verschluss-Kamera-Primar. The camera is square and is made for the format 13 x 18, and in this example is made of walnut with nickel fittings, and leather bellows. It could also be delivered in Mahogany. The front has rise and cross movements, and the camera has double extension.
The integrated focal plane shutter is not self-capped, and the slit width is set internally on the curtain, similarly to the Anschütz shutter. Also like the second version of the Anschütz simple shutter, it is a 2-slit mechanism: one slit is fixed full-frame for time exposures, and the other slit is variable for instantaneous exposures. The speeds result from the combination of slit width and variable helical tension, with a maximum of 1/1000.
The camera was also sold by various other distributors, including in France at least by Poulenc Frères. This example was commercialized in France and has a Demaria Frères Anastigmat with focal length of 210 mm and maximum aperture of 8.
Note the focal plane shutter, the double-extension base and the lever for controlling horizontal movements at the front.
The back of the camera: variable slit with internal control on the focal plane shutter.
