Chronology of cameras Canon
The Explorer (its "marketing" name) is a complex camera.
Naked, it resembles the Snappy. Thus, it behaves like a normal compact camera (slightly more so, as it can even go underwater). Its lens, composed of five lenses, without focus adjustment, with a focal length of 35 mm, is easy to use. Since it has a built-in flash, it lacks an accessory shoe. A slider locks the shutter release. A lever triggers the flash.
To truly use it underwater is another story! It needs to be dressed with an orange face mask held by a large elastic band, which isn't straightforward to set up. The purpose of this addition is to provide the camera with an accessory shoe and a threaded socket for a tripod. In the shoe, an underwater sports viewfinder can be inserted. Without it, it's impossible to aim underwater. Underwater, the focal length corresponds to 33.6 mm. The depth of field is then very shallow.
With the camera's settings reduced to a minimum, its use underwater isn't difficult, but a few points need attention. For instance, the counter, graduated every 4 frames, is unreadable underwater. Since the camera automatically rewinds the film at the end, it's best to remember the remaining number of shots. The "S" that appears after rewinding is unreadable.
It's possible to adapt a macro kit to this camera. This option raises the price of the set to 1800 francs, which is 300 francs more than the price of the camera in its basic configuration. A close-up lens can be inserted into the face mask, in front of the lens. Also included in this kit are two hoops, whose attachment point is also the shoe. They are positioned in front of the camera and define the field of view. There is also an arm that screws into the tripod socket. Its usefulness is that of a rod corresponding to the ideal shooting distance in macro.
It's a very suitable camera for snorkeling (tested up to 15 meters). It has positive buoyancy, which prevents it from sinking to the bottom. However, it has a major flaw. Changing the film quickly becomes a hassle when the face mask is in place.
