Chronology of cameras Sommer

Bernhard Sommer was primarily a shutter maker from Dresden in Germany. For a brief period he made strut folding press cameras that were sold directly or re-branded by other makers.

The Sport R.1 was made from circa 1927 to 1934, and there is not much information on it, only that was produced in low numbers. It is a wood-bodied camera with metal front plate, for glass plates and cut-film holders. The construction quality is of high standard, and the camera is covered with black leather.

This model is for 6.5 x 9 cm plates or cut film holders, the smallest of the range. It has a direct vision plus a Newton viewfinder. The focal plane shutter has controls for both slit width and spring tension, delivering speeds in the range 1/15 to 1/1000 and T.

It is equipped with a Meyer Gorlitz Satz-Plasmat of 11.3 cm of focal length and with maximum aperture of 4.5.

Overall it is a very nice camera that probably was discontinued due to the fierce competition in the press camera market of the time.
