Chronology of cameras Huttig

The Hüttig Helios is a solid and sophisticated strut folding camera, made of wood covered with finely grained black leather. The camera appeared first in c. 1907, and this particular specimen is from 1908, as written in the makers’ logo: “modell 1908”. The struts are flat and slotted, and have an uncommon mechanism for closing – pressing small levers on the front and the standard folds easily. The black leather bellows are pleated. On the top there is a folding Newton finder and a bubble level. The wooden front standard has an articulated frame that folds with a lock system. On the lower standard there is a support to hold the camera levelled.

The focal plane shutter has separate controls for slit width and spring tension. The slit width is operated by a wheel on the left side of the camera, and ranges from 3 to 90 mm. The speeds can be set to Rapid (1) or Extra Rapid (2) on the knob on the lower right side of the camera (with reference window and reset button on the opposite side), and the combination with the slit width delivers speeds in the range 1/6 to 1/1000 seconds plus Z (T), seen on a table on the left side of the camera. There is a lateral release button and a pneumatic remote release on the bottom below the shutter.

The lens is placed on an elevated mount: Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar of 16.5 cm of focal length and maximum aperture of 4.5. The lensboard has horizontal and vertical movements for perspective correction.
