Ricoh aime recycler les noms de ses appareils. Du temps de l'argentique, il y avait des Ricoh GR et des Ricoh R. Du temps du numérique, il y a de nouveau des Ricoh GR et de Ricoh R. Aux GR à focale fixe répondent les R avec zoom. Le positionnement est moins élitiste et c'est le grand public en recherche de compact de qualité qui est visé par la gamme R.
Ainsi, le R8 ne propose pas de réglage de l'ouverture ou de la vitesse, il faut se contenter du mode Auto ou des modes Scènes. Si le zoom est bon, la gestion du bruit n'est pas optimum. Les images perdent du piqué dés la montée des ISO.
