Chronology of cameras Mansfield
Au moins trois modèles Yamato sont fabriqués sur la même base technique. Il s'agit des Simflex 35, Pax Jr et Mansfield Starlite. Ils ont tous le même corps et le même objectif. Leur viseur est démesuré, bien avant l'époque des Big Finder. Celui des Simflex 35 et Pax Jr comporte un cadre brillant limitant les erreurs de paralaxe. Sur le Simflex 35, l'objectif Luminor Anastrigmat 3,5/45 mm est marqué d'un C, qui laisse supposer qu'il est traité (coated), mais la réalité est peut-être moins flatteuse. Le Mansfield a un contact pour flash dans la griffe pour accessoires, les deux autres se contentent d'une prise synchro sur le fût de l'objectif. L'échelle des distances du Mansfield est graduée en métre et pied.
Ce modèle fut distribué aux USA sous la marque Mansfield, dont on voit le logo à droite. Le logo de Yamato apparaît sur le verrou de fermeture du dos et de la semelle.
The exact history of the Yamato brand is not well-known. If we focus on the cameras bearing the name Yamato, the first one (as defined) appears in the late 1940s. It is the Minon 35, a small, well-crafted camera that uses Bolta cartridge film. Shortly after, a horizontal folding 6x6 camera accompanies it, but neither of them is what the brand is known for. During the 1950s and 1960s, the manufacturer released a series of small 35mm cameras with different levels of technology (basic, rangefinder, automatic exposure), all remarkably well-made. The surviving examples found today are often in excellent condition. Chronologically, the early models were inspired by Leica, and later models have a more modern shape, but they all have a family resemblance. These cameras rarely fail to capture the interest of collectors.
