Chronology of cameras Olympus

This model represents the pinnacle of the brand's production of film-based SLR cameras. Introduced in 1987, the Ti (Titanium) version comes in two finishes: black or champagne.
The cast body is complemented by a titanium top cover and baseplate, treated to resist scratches. The lens mount is made of stainless steel. Compared to the OM-4, this model offers improved weather sealing against rain and dust, thanks to enhanced seals. The shutter is of older design (horizontal curtain movement and flash sync at 1/60s), but it can sync up to 1/2000s with the Olympus F280 flash.

In addition to TTL flash capability and real-time film exposure verification, the OM-4 Ti can record up to 8 spot meter readings, average them, and apply the average to exposure settings. This average reading can be stored for up to an hour. The eight readings are displayed in the viewfinder using a liquid crystal bar graph. Removing the lens also clears exposure memorizations, detected by a spring-loaded pin on the lens mount.

One could also expose either for highlights or shadows and memorize the exposure. The camera could be used traditionally in aperture-priority mode as well. It was possible to mix natural light and flash at all speeds using a specialized slow-sync flash. Battery consumption was reduced compared to the OM-4.

A variety of compatible accessories were available for the OM range, including 14 focusing screens, a 5 frames-per-second motor drive, a winder, a 250-frame back, and date back options. Among the many lenses, there were 4 special lenses for close-up photography with magnifications exceeding 1x. Notable lenses include a 2/21mm, a 3.5/24mm with tilt, a 2/180mm, a 2/250mm, and a 2.8/350mm. Some macro accessories developed specifically for this camera range still have no equivalent today, making the purchase of this camera worthwhile.

Introduced in 1973 with the OM-1 (initially called the M1 but later renamed following a complaint from Leitz), the OM series disappeared with the advent of digital photography. The creator of the Pen series, Mr. Maitani, was behind the OM series.
