Chronology of cameras Rollei
This model of the 'Baby' Rolleiflex for 4x4 frames on vest pocket 127 film is the rarest of the regular Rolleiflex models, excepting the elusive Rolleiflex Studio 9x9. According to factory data assembled by Claus Prochnow (Rollei Report 1) only 140 cameras were built. The period of manufacture was from December 1934 to June 1936.
This model is characterised by having the combination of a peep window above the viewing lens, a Compur-Rapid shutter with maximum speed up to 1/500, and a Carl Zeiss Tessar with focal length of 6 cm opening to 3.5. Serial numbers started at 155 000 but the numbers were intermingled with model 423 (2,8 Tessar).
The Rolleiflex 4x4 was difficult to sell along the 1930s. The camera was relatively expensive and times were difficult due to the depressed economic conditions. Sales were poor and declining in this period. The less popular models equipped with 3.5 lenses were produced in progressively lower numbers, which explains why this camera is nowadays so rare.
Nevertheless, it is a fantastic piece of engineer with excellent performance.
