__________

3M means Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing. It's an American company. It was founded in 1902; its' initial purpose was to mine the mineral for the manufacture of sandpaper which it also made.

In 1925, 3M introduced a masking tape called Scotch to the market. It was not until 1930 that Scotch, as we know it, a transparent adhesive tape, was introduced. Electrical insulating Scotch made its' appearance in 1945. The first Scotch magnetic strips arrived in 1947, Scotchguard waterproofing in 1956 and Scotch-Brite began to scratch in 1958.

3M bought the manufacturer Revere in 1960.

In 1964 3M bought the Italian company Ferrania, a manufacturer of photographic products, because it had European know-how and industrial facilities for the manufacture of film and emulsion deposition which 3M did not have. The existence of the Revere and Ferrania companies in the 3M group explains why we find cameras carrying the logo of the Minnesota miners on both sides of the Atlantic since 1964/5.
