Chronology of cameras Sida
The invention of the Sida camera and its derivatives is commonly attributed to Fritz Kaftanski, who is more well-known for his Fex cameras. However, to be precise, the credit belongs to both Karl Gumpel and Fritz Kaftanski, as evidenced by the patents filed for the precursor of this camera.
The Sida camera was manufactured in Berlin during the 1930s. It had several variations that differed in terms of materials, technical operation, and more. The film used was specific, producing negatives of 24 x 24 mm. The lens was an 8/35 mm.
Years later, after the war, a French version of the camera would emerge, called the Sidax, made from bakelite. Equivalent models were manufactured under license in other parts of the world, including Britain and Italy.

C'est sans aucun doute le premier appareil Sida fabriqué fin 1935, début 1936, par la société allemande éponyme, sise à Berlin Charlottenburg (vraisemblablement au 4, Kurfürstendamm).
Le boîtier moulé en fonte d’aluminium est strictement conforme aux brevets déposés par Karl Gumpel et Fritz Kaftanski en décembre 1934.
L’appareil est livré avec un viseur sportif à cadre métallique escamotable très fragile, ce qui explique qu'un grand nombre de boîtiers actuellement sur le marché en est dépourvu. Il est également équipé d'un viseur optique amovible optionnel tout aussi rare. Ce dernier se coulisse tout simplement sur une queue d'aronde.
La tirette latérale permet de basculer de la position T (Time), correspondant à une vitesse de 1/25 ème de seconde, à la position M (Moment).
Un film de 8 vues de format 25 x 25 Spécial SIDA fut fabriqué pour ces boîtiers. Les premières bobines avaient des axes moulés en fonte d'aluminium. Trop fragiles, ces axes furent remplacés par d'autres fabriqués dans un métal moins cassant.
