Chronology of cameras Nikon
The first Coolpix only had a designation number ; with the exception of the SQ marketed in 2003, it was not until 2005 that they received a letter indicative of the product line. In 2005 Nikon did let go, launching the S, P, and L lines. Each letter goes with a product line : S for Style, P for Performance, and L for Life.
The S models have a very stylish design. They are very flat, with quite a minimalist front face. Lens and flash are in the upper right corner.
The P models have built-in wi-fi, and a sensor of better resolution than corresponding L models. They enjoy a vibration reduction (VR) system. Their optical zoom is shorter than on the L, but their digital zoom longer.
The L series targets beginners, whereas the P is intended for more advanced photographers. The S series are intended for esthetes.
As the different lines mature, some functions, such as VR, will migrate towards lower ranges. For instance the L14 is released to the market at the same time as the L15, without VR whereas the other one has it. The L14 is packed with features presumed to attract beginners, such as face detection, a fireworks mode, etc…
