Chronology of cameras Nichiryo

The Nicnon-S is the combination of a monocular and a half-frame camera in this case a Ricoh Auto Half E.

While the binocular version is quite common, either under the original Nicnon manufacture or in the Ricoh Teleca 240 version, the Nicnon-S monocular is rare.
It is not documented either in the Mc Keown's (9th edition) or in the Sugiyama. It seems that its production began in 1968 at the same time as the Nicnon "Binoculars" and nothing indicates that it was taken back by Ricoh.

The model is not just the right part of the binocular pair, but has manufacturing differences.
Indeed, it was necessary to adapt an helical ramp and a ring for the focusing because on the binoculars the focus is conventionally made by a central wheel controlling telescopic tubes on each of the optics.
As the focusing ring occupies a large area on the barrel, the apperture control was moved backwards, next to the camera body while at the front , the telescopic sunshade of the two-optical model has not been installed. It is replaced by a removable sunshade to screw at the front, it also has a male thread inside so it can be screwed returned for transportation.

The Nicnon-S also accepts the Nicnon-C optical complement, which increases the focal length to 236 mm while keeping the same aperture.
Note the important difference between the relative aperture F and the photometric aperture T ( F3.5 to F11 vs. T9 to T32 ), probably due to the loss of light in the semi-reflective mirror that returns the image to the camera.
