Chronology of cameras Nettel
The Nettel Reflex-Nettel was a SLR camera made by Nettel under the patent obtained from the Dutch camera maker Willem H. Brandsma. For a short period before selling the patent to Nettel, Brandsma made a similar camera with different focal shutter – the camera was named Senco Folding Reflex and was commercialised by the Brandsma company Schaap & Co. The camera structure is very ingenious and is a fine example of the folding-reflex design.
The camera was launched just before WWI and production then rapidly ceased due to the war. So, despite its quality, production was limited and it is a rare find today. The camera would re-emerge as the Contessa-Nettel Miroflex in 1925 and would continue for several years into the Zeiss Ikon era.
The Reflex-Nettel was made for size 9 x 12 only, the wooden body is leather covered but the front is finished in polished wood. The lensboard has rise and fall, and the back rotates for horizontal and vertical views.
The Nettel catalogue from 1913-14 refer the lenses Carl Zeiss Tessar and the Goerz Dogmar, both with 16.5 cm of focal distance and 4.5 of maximum aperture – this specimen has the Zeiss installed. The focal plane shutter is the same as that installed on Deckrullo-Nettel period cameras, self-capped and with 3 sets of speeds derived from a geared train break mechanism.
