Chronology of cameras Chinon
The Chinon Handyzoom, when presented at Photokina in 1988, was the first camera to offer an automatic framing function. The autofocus system measures the distance to the subject being photographed and selects the focal length it deems most appropriate. Naturally, this feature doesn't work well with landscapes but is intended for photographing people, which constitutes the majority of photos taken by most people.
To explain the principle as simply as possible, imagine there are three autofocus zones, each detecting the position and distance of an object. A computer then determines the main subject of the photo and its position, instructing the zoom to automatically adjust to the most suitable focal length.
However, it wasn't this technical innovation that persuaded Eric to purchase the camera:
"The decisive factor in buying this compact: I bought it because it was ... ugly. Not all compacts from the 90s were triumphs of design, but this one...
Without intending to be critical, besides being aesthetically 'unique,' I find it very impractical from an ergonomic standpoint. I don't think there's a single control that falls naturally under the finger, and just to align the viewfinder with the eye, one has to contort oneself.
Maybe it's due to all these 'qualities' that you see so few of them..."
This camera would only be available in its final version on the French market in spring 1989.
