Chronology of cameras Nikon

According to the Nikon Saga book by Patrice-Hervé Pont(1), the F-401 is a camera for amateurs (it is written "low end" actually). It was the first Nikon SLR camera to benefit from a built-in flash and a rounded-based Bio-design (although there are still a lot of edges).
Like many of the Nikon SLRs featuring a motor drive, it is powered by LR6 batteries which have the advantages of being readily available and inexpensive. The shutter speed and aperture dials are located on the top cover and protected by a plexiglass plate.

The F-401 has been updated two years later with the F-401s release which features an improved autofocus and a dials locking on A and L positions for the shutter speeds and S position for the apertures.

In the United States, the F-401 is named after N4004.
