Chronology of cameras Minolta
1958 was a very productive year for Minolta, 4 cameras were introduced that year and some of these cameras can be considered trend setters. The SR-2 was the first Minolta Reflex, the Autowide, the V2 which had a shutter speed of 1/2000, a record at the time and finally the 35 IIB that is discussed on this page.
The 35 IIB is the last Minolta rangefinder with interchangeable lenses with 39 mm thread.
The changes compared to the 35 II are mainly cosmetic, and the differences between the 35 II (type b) are only minor. On the other hand, there has been a significant evolution compared to the 35 A “Osaka”. The viewfinder for instance was completely redesigned and with a magnifying ratio of 0.80 is much more comfortable compared to the previous model.
The rapid wind lever, which now seems quite natural, might have confused photographers at that time as they were used to advancing the film by turning a dial … In 1958, the rapid wind lever was certainly a major innovation !
On the other hand, opening the camera is done by turning a large knob on the bottom of the camera, which (in my opinion) is less practical compared to the spring catch which was used on the 35 models A to F and which subsequently was adopted by most reflex cameras including those from other brands.
