Chronology of cameras Butcher

Midg was the name of a series of detective-type cameras. In the 1913/14 catalog, there were five models: Numbers 0 and 00 were the simplest models, while Numbers 1, 2, and 3 were more advanced, notably because of their Lukos shutter, which was fully accessible through a front door.

__________

The Midg are a series of magazine cameras manufactured by Butcher from 1900 to 1920. They were also sold in Japan between 1906 and 1912.

This model is the Midg 0, the simplest one.

An iris diaphragm allows aperture from f : 8 to f : 44 . The speed range is from 1/100 to 1/ 2 seconds and T exposure. The distances setting has four positions: 4, 8, 12 feet  and OPEN. This moves a plate with some lens elements behind the lens (hence intermediate distances are not available !) .

The protection against the double exposure is obtained by locking the shutter in the down position after triggering. It must be raised back in up position to take the next photo.
On the top rear, a handle is used to drop the exposed plate and put in place the following which is pressed by a spring spring . This same lever increment the plate counter.

The Midg were made famous by the case of the Cottingley Fairies : in 1917, two cousins ??claimed to have photographed fairies with a Midg .
