Two years after the R1 cleverly equipped with a fixed focal length of 30 mm and a 24 mm position for a Panorama mode, Ricoh brings to market the GR1 .
We can find on the GR1 part of the R1's architecture, but we are dealing here with a top class device, the casing is made ??of magnesium alloy injected, the lens, retracted at rest, is a high quality 28 mm with 7 elements in 4 groups and opening to 2.8.
The shutter works in program mode and aperture priority , it is possible to correct the exposure from -2 to +2 EV and we also enjoy a pose T.
The focusing has a multizone AF module (3 zones) but it can be used also on central zone mode and you may memorise the focusing with the shutter release. It can also be forced at infinity or preset a fixed focusing distance to work at hyperfocal for example.
When loaded, the film cartridge 135 is fully unwound in the camera while the possible number of views is calculated , it helps to know exactly how many views are to be taken and in case of accidental opening of the back, the exposed views are preserved in the cartridge 135 , only the virgin film is lost.
This is a solid high-end camera at ease among others in life's report.
It places as competitor of the Nikon 28 Ti (1994) and the Minolta TC- 1 (1996) but with one side more adventurer than "jewel".
It will have a numerous progeny with both film-based camera: the GR1s , GR10, GR1v, GR21, that numerical GR Digital I, II , III , IV, and recently (2013) the GR )
The camera exists also in black color and without or with timestamp device, like this one where it is visible on the right flank of the camera. The model without timestamp is lighter by ... 2 grams.
