The launch of FM marked a change in the genealogy of the cameras of the Nikon mark, since it was the first model equipped with the new system of coupling AI (Automatic Indexing System) recognizable to the pins exceeding of the back ring of the lens. The bayonet remained that appeared in 1959. It was as smaller as these predecessors.
FM is a semi-automatic not-interchangeable finder camera (contrary to F-2). The lenses former to the launch of range AI could be adapted in workshop.
This camera also existed with a black painted top.
