Chronology of cameras Miranda

The Miranda MS-3 is a Pentax K mount SLR. Exposure is either manual or automatic with aperture priority.

The Miranda MS-3 was marketed in the United Kingdom by Dixons distributor(*). It was offered in 3 colors: black, grey and white. The black version is the most common by far.

For this model, Dixons got its supplies from Cosina, the Miranda MS-3 being a rebranded Cosina CT90.

The Vivitar V635 is part of the same siblings, with a small difference however. The top cover part around the film speed selector index has a slightly different shape: on the Vivitar, it also has exposure compensation marks to the detriment of the film plane indicator which disappears.

The Miranda MS-3 was offered with Miranda 28-70mm f1:3.5-4.8 MC Macro lens; Miranda ZF-3 flash with non-orientable zoom head was an optional complement to this bundle.

A mystery surrounds the MS-3 ...
In the "Specifications" section of the user manual, autofocus capabilities are mentioned:
- "Mount type: Bayonet "K" mount with AF connector."
- "Synchronization with Autofocus lens: With MIRANDA AF lens attached autofocusing operation controlled by operating shutter release button."
Observation of the bayonet on the body side does indeed show 3 contacts but which do not match Pentax KF or KAF mounts contacts.

And no Miranda lenses with AF feature could be traced so far:
- Miranda MS-3 found on online sales sites are always fitted with manual focus lenses.
- Unlike Vivitar V635 user manual, Miranda MS-3 user manual does not contain any AF lenses picture.
- The small contemporary booklet upon Miranda lenses does not mention AF lenses.

(*) Like the Miranda MS-1, MS-1 Super, MS-1N and MS-2 Super, the Miranda MS-3 was marketed in the United Kingdom during the period during which the Miranda brand was owned by Dixons distributor. Dixons bought the brand in 1981 after the bankruptcy of the Japanese company behind the Miranda brand at the end of 1976.
