Chronology of cameras Kodak
This version of the Kodak Six-16 is sometimes called "Improved", but this name is not from Kodak.
Kodak Six-16 had a dual career in the United States and Great Britain. It was the first model using Kodak 616 film.
The American model existed from 1932 to 1936; the British from 1934 to 1939.
On both sides of the Atlantic, the models evolved during these years and consequently we may find quite many versions under the same name.
The first American version must be open and set manually by pulling the stand of the bed, so that the bellows expands fully. The following versions and all UK versions are "self-erecting", i.e. that releases the bed by pressing a button and then the struts, with sophisticated kinematics and the assistance of a spring, facilitate the full deployment of the bellows and the positioning of the lens/ shutter block.
From May 1934, the chrome plated struts become lacquered like the sides of the body.
The most evolved American version (specimen on this page) has a Compur shutter and lens opening to 4.5, where other versions are offering Kodak shutters and lenses opening to 6.3 as a maximum.
The version of the Kodak Six-16 commonly called "Improved" is distinguished by its elegant black lacquered struts with chrome edges.
This model has a circular lens holder block, which distinguishes it from the version with an octagonal block.
