Chronology of cameras Beck R J
Both the Frena No. 6 and No. 6G are folding cameras that share a number of features and are primarily distinguished by the presence of a plate holder on the No. 6. It can even be said that the 6G is a simplified version of the 6.
Both are quarter-plate bellows cameras with a Beck Achromatic Single lens and fixed focus. The same lens is also found on the Frena No. 22. The shutter offers speeds of 1/5, 1/10, 1/20, 1/40, 1/80, and B. There are two viewfinders. When open, the front part needs to be pulled towards the user and locked in that position using the bellows.
On the No. 6G, once the bellows are folded, the camera is very compact (for its time). However, this is not the case with the No. 6, as the part common to both models is fixed on a bulky 40-plate holder. In this configuration, the viewfinder must have been particularly uncomfortable.
In 1854, two brothers, Richard and Joseph Beck, renamed their London-based optics and microscope company to R & J Beck Ltd after the withdrawal of their third partner, James Smith. The production of cameras began in 1880, and it was in 1892 that the Frena models with their unique system of a notched-edge roll film magazine were introduced.
