Chronology of cameras Polaroid

Traduction de Sylvain Halgand

The majority of the cameras of this series 600 are equipped with the Lightmixer program (even if it is not written above). This program corresponds to a proportioning of the light of the flash compared to the ambient light. With the sun, the exposure is carried out to 75% by the ambient light and 25% by the light of the flash. In the event of weak luminosity, the exposure comes from the only flash.

The 660 was when launched, most advanced of the range of the 600. It is manufactured made of moulded matter of high strength. When it is closed, i.e. when the flash is folded back, the lens is protected and the viewfinding is then impossible. As soon as the flash is raised, the camera is ready to function. It is enough to viewfind, start and wait 90 seconds to obtain a perfectly exposed photograph.

The 660 has the system of automatic focusing by sonar * which we know on Polasonic 4000 and 5000. The distance from the subject is memorized at the beginning from release. With the aperture of the shutter, the diaphragm is regulated for the flash according to the distance. According to the luminous level measured by the cell, the fill in or the full flash is used. In the second case, only the distance intervenes for the ordering of the flash. In the event of Fill In, the obturation allows the 3/4 of the exposure. The flash is then started, and the cell stops it as soon as my 25% of exposure complementary are reached.

With the difference from the 4000 and 5000, the 660 AF uses films of series 600, and either SX-70. 600 and SX-70 cartridges are of the same size, but not interchangeable. The battery Planar Polapulse (6 volts) is incorporated in the film cartridge, in order to avoid any problem of wear of this one.
Films 600 are called thus because their sensitivity is of 600 ASA. At the time of their launch, they were the instantaneous films fastest in the world.

The lens is with two lenses, of which first is treated and corrected for the color. For the second lens, a disc on which four different lenses are, turns to put in function the lens which corresponds to the measurement of the distance.

* Principle of the sonar (Polasonic): the gilded mylar membrane emits ultrasounds at the frequency of 50 Khz. At the beginning of the emission, a clock is started. With the return of the waves on the receiver, the clock is stopped. A program calculates time and converts it into distance. The result conditions the choice of the posterior lens of the lens.
