Chronology of cameras Selecta

The klapp 'Sélecta' is a mysterious French strut folding camera from the time of the First World War. The camera has some similarities with the Klopcic and Nettel, notably the scissor struts and associated focusing slides. But it has special features not found in any other camera and is called "Sélecta" on the shutter, back and lens. It is possible that the camera is from the manufacturer "SELECTA Agence de Fabriques Angoulême" of Edgard Salomon (established in Angoulême in 1913), and of who no other camera is known. The focal plane shutter comes from the patents of the engineer Alfred Walser (FR430353A and FR15995E). However, no patents have been found for the camera and its innovative features, and some uncertainty remains about the manufacturer and its history.

The Sélecta camera has a square body covered with Moroccan leather and is designed for 9x12 format. The body is relatively light, made of blackened wood but reinforced by a strong metal frame inside. The top has no major features, such as folding viewfinders or spirit levels, except for the installation of the rotation axis for the extendable front panel and a recess where the focus wheel retracts when the camera is closed. The right side is the shutter face, with the controls on the upper two-thirds and the speed table below.

The front extension uses simple scissors and focusing is done by the control at the front plate and not, as in the Nettel or Klopcic, at the main body. The configuration is somewhat similar to the one used by Plaubel (Makina), although the internal mechanism is very different. The front locking mechanism is also quite special, consisting of a large metal piece that engages in a rod on the body and holds its position by means of a strong spring.

The viewfinder is an interesting and unique feature; the double-frame system and the automatic guide mechanism are not visible in any other camera. The frame is a flat wire, and by pulling on the upper frame (which frames the image), it engages an inner sub-frame and activates the guiding movement of the sight by moving it upwards. By lowering the frame, the sight guide pin retracts in the opposite direction.

The main (upper) shutter mechanism offers speeds between 1/30 and 1/2500, which corresponds to a slot width of 8 to 0.1 cm, plus a P position for long exposures. The lower mechanism, which is operated by turning the main shutter release dial to the I position, provides speeds from ¼ to 4 seconds and has its own selector switch. The lens is marked with the same brand name as the camera - Sélecta - and appears to be a rebranding of a generic lens from another manufacturer, without a serial number. The inscription reads as follows: "Anastigmat Selecta 6 Verres", with a focal length of 135 mm and a maximum aperture of 6.8. The aperture therefore starts at 6.8 and closes at 56 using a 15-blade iris.

The camera appears to be a prototype or pre-production camera. It is likely that complications due to the First World War prevented its development, either due to financial or other difficulties.
