Sous un design très semblable à un 35 mm, se "cache" un moyen format de qualité. Le format réel du Pentax 6 x 7 est 55 x 70 mm et permet 10 poses sur film 120 ou 21 sur film 220.
Il a la particularité d'avoir deux montures de baïonnette ; une intérieure pour objectifs de 35 à 300 mm et une extérieure pour objectifs de 400 à 1000 mm.
