Chronology of cameras Chinon

The Chinon 35 F and 35 FS  were presented at Photokina in 1982. The Chinon 35 FS was then named Monami 35 FS, but this name was not used in France.

The Chinon 35 F and 35 FS come from the same mold. If you look closely at the front of the 35 F, you can see a small round protrusion near the viewfinder window that serves no purpose. On the 35 FS, the same protrusion contains a red LED.

Both models have common features:
They have a simplified film loading mode. The film advance is still manual, as both cameras belong to a generation before motorization. The focus is manual. There is an adjustment ring around the lens. Seen from above, it displays four distance icons: "Portrait, couple, group, and landscape." Below, the equivalents are shown in meters and feet.
They also have a built-in "pop-up" electronic flash that must be extended to activate.

The 35 F is more modest, with a single shutter speed (1/125) and no self-timer. An LED lights up to indicate that the flash needs to be activated. On the 35 FS, two LEDs indicate that the conditions are favorable for taking a picture.

In 1970, Chinon was still only a subcontractor for other camera brands. It was only around 1972 that the first cameras were marketed under the Chinon brand. At that time, it was easy to follow a naming logic for the first models:

EE = Electronic Eye
F = Flash
A = Autofocus
M = Motor

    Year Focusing Flash Motor DX

35 EE 1972 Rangefinder No No No
35 c. 1977 Manual
35 EE-II c. 1977 Rangefinder
35 F-EE 1978 Manual Yes
35 F-A 1978 Autofocus
35 F-M 1980 Manual Yes
35 F-MA intrafocus 1980 Autofocus
35 F 1982 Manual No
35 FS 1982 Manual
35 F-II 1984 Fixfocus
35 FS-II   1984 Fixfocus Yes
35 FS-A   1984 Autofocus
35 FA Super 1985 Yes No
35 FA II 1985

With the 35 FX III, Chinon reached the limits of its naming logic. Despite being called 34, this model no longer has anything in common with its predecessors.
