Chronology of cameras Houghton

The Ensign box camera saga began around 1911/1912.
They were listed as "Ensign" in some catalogs, or, as in a Houghton catalog (circa 1911), "Box-Form Ensign."
The early Ensign box cameras were named based on their inch dimensions:

Box Ensign 2 1/4 A for negatives sized 2 1/4 x 2 1/4.
Box Ensign 2 1/4 B for negatives sized 3 1/4 x 2 1/4.
Box Ensign 2 1/2    for negatives sized 4 1/4 x 2 1/2.
Box Ensign 3 1/4    for negatives sized 3 1/4 x 4 1/4.
Box Ensign 3 1/2    for negatives sized 3 1/2 x 3 1/2.

They were available in different colors, primarily black, brown, or occasionally red.
Around 1923, they underwent a rejuvenation, all while retaining the same names:

Box Ensign 2 1/4 A for negatives sized 2 1/4 x 2 1/4.
Box Ensign 2 1/4 B for negatives sized 3 1/4 x 2 1/4.
Box Ensign 2 1/2    for negatives sized 4 1/4 x 2 1/2.
