Il s'agit du premier reflex de la marque Canon. Il a un prisme amovible et une cellule extérieure au Selenium qui peut venir se coupler avec le réglage des vitesses.
La vitesse d'obturation est limitée à 1/1000ème, elle atteindra le 1/2000ème sur le Canonflex R2000.
