Eos 500 marks the beginning of a new era for the reflex cameras SLR, that of direct competition with the upscale compacts. From now on, they are also easy to use and they are also light and compact. Moreover, they are with interchangeable lenses.
The 500 is much lighter and more compact than its predecessor, Eos 1000. It is lighter than Epoca or than a PRIMA Zoom F.
All that without anything to disavow, because it has functions that Eos 1000 did not have. The surface of measure of the autofocus system is increased considerably. The noise of operation is reduced. The measure of the light is corroborated with that of the autofocus system. It is improved, including with the flash.
To decrease the weight and the size, certain mechanical parts are from now on or simply disappeared. Thus, there is no more wheel notched to control the number of perforations during advance of film. It is replaced by an infra-red detector which counts the holes.
Compared to Eos 1000, some essential functions like mode “SF” or the little music of the self-timer disappear. Who will complain some?
